San Rafael, California — December 2025
Aldersly, the century-old Danish-heritage senior living community in San Rafael, today announced the upcoming retirement of Peter Schakow, who has served on the Board for 18 years, including 13 years as President and Chief Executive Officer.
Under Schakow’s leadership, Aldersly has experienced one of the most significant periods of growth in its 105-year history, highlighted by the completion of the Marselisborg Building — a centerpiece of the community’s decade-long master plan and a symbol of Aldersly’s renewed commitment to quality, innovation, and its enduring Danish roots.
“It has been an extraordinary journey guiding Aldersly through transformation while preserving its spirit,” said Schakow. “The opening of the Marselisborg Building marks a new chapter for our community — one that blends modern design and compassionate care with the timeless values that have always defined Aldersly.”
Schakow expressed gratitude to the residents, staff, and partners who made this progress possible, particularly Executive Director, Mike Sharkey, from Life Care Services (LCS), Aldersly’s operations partner, who will continue to guide Aldersly’s next chapter of leadership and growth.
“Peter’s vision and steady leadership have positioned Aldersly for a vibrant future,” said Sharkey. “His commitment to innovation and heritage will remain a lasting part of our culture.”
During Schakow’s tenure, Aldersly completed the renovation of the Rosenborg building, adding a dedicated Memory Care floor, introduced advanced technology systems, strengthened financial sustainability, and cultivated strong community partnerships — all while deepening its cultural and philanthropic roots.
As he retires, Schakow leaves behind a legacy of thoughtful stewardship and forward-looking innovation that will continue to shape Aldersly for decades to come.
